Owning shares

What does it mean to own shares in a company?

Owning shares in a company brings a wide range of possibilities and opportunities, the nature of which depends to a great extent on the proportionate amount of your shareholding. Having shares in an organisation means you own part of that company. The more you own the greater your influence and control over the company.

Shares can increase or decrease in value mostly due to the financial performance of the company.  However share value can also fluctuate due to external factors such as an unexpected rise in demand for a product or uncertainty on the stock exchange. Having shares means you will have a keen interest in the performance and reputation of the organisation in which you have invested.
